Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team won their fourth straight game with a large defensive effort on Saturday (Jan. 4) evening at Alumni Arena.
Walsh held the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans to 36 points on 31.3% shooting in a 65-36 win on Saturday. The 36 points allowed was the lowest total in the Division II era and fewest given up since 2010 when Walsh held Redeemer to 30 points.
Trevecca started the ballgame with a 2-0 lead on a jumper 45 seconds in. Sterling Christy got a three-point play as Walsh took a 3-2 lead ninety seconds into the contest. After the three point play, Mark Mokros hit two three pointers and Caleb Canter added four points during a 15-3 run. Walsh led 15-5 at the under 12 media timeout. Following the under eight media timeout and a 20-8 lead, Walsh closed the first half with an 18-4 run in 7:47. Darryl Straughter scored nine points on the run while Mokros hit a pair of three pointers. At one point, Walsh scored 14 consecutive points in six minutes. The Cavaliers led 38-12 at halftime.
The 18-4 run continued into the second half as Walsh scored 11 straight points out of the locker room on a trio of three pointers. After the 29-4 run, Walsh's lead increased to 49-12 with 17:18 left. Over the ten minutes, the teams combined for 20 points as Walsh led 57-24 at the under eight media timeout. Trevecca outscored Walsh 12-8 in the final 7:43 as the final score was 65-36.
Three players scored double-figures for Walsh as nine different players found the scorebook. Christy finished with 15 points on six field goals (one three) and two free throws. Mokros nailed five three pointers for a total of 15 points. In his last four games, he has 24 threes totaling 80 points. Straughter came off the bench, returning from an ankle injury and scored 11 points. JT Shumate added five points, six rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks.
Walsh shot 39.7% (25-63) from the floor to Trevecca's 31.3% (15-48) in the game. The Cavaliers made ten threes in the contest. As a team, Walsh forced 23 turnovers creating 27 points on the floor.
The Cavaliers will step away from G-MAC play for the final time, hosting Bluefield State on Tuesday (Jan. 7) night at 7:00 PM.
