Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Following a close game at Findlay last weekend, the Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team used a 16-2 second half run on Thursday (Feb. 6) night at Alumni Arena to create distance with their opponent. The Cavaliers held the Alderson Broaddus Battlers at bay, 75-64 in a G-MAC matchup.
Walsh improved to 19-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference, sharing the best record with the Hillsdale Chargers and the Findlay Oilers.
Walsh led for over 38 minutes in the ballgame, trailing by only one for 30 seconds in the first half. The Cavaliers led by as many as ten twice in the first half and held a 40-33 lead at halftime. Alderson Broaddus trimmed the Cavaliers lead to two three times in the opening five minutes of the second half. Walsh turned the Battlers away with a 16-2 run over a span of nearly five minutes. Darryl Straughter, Reece Bogan, Conner Wess and Christian Montague each hit a three pointer while JT Shumate and Caleb Canter scored layups on the run as the lead grew to 16, the highest of the evening. From that point forward, the Cavaliers led by double-digits and cruised to the 75-64 victory.
Straughter led the Cavaliers offense with 23 points on eight field goals (four threes) and three free throws. He added four rebounds for Walsh. Montague converted five field goals, including three treys in an 15 point effort. Mark Mokros added 11 points off the bench with a pair of three pointers. Canter finished with 12 rebounds (seven offensive), four points, five assists and three blocks. Shumate grabbed ten rebounds with seven points on the night.
The Cavaliers made 13 three pointers, and shot 41.7% for the evening.
Walsh will host Ohio Valley on Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon at Alumni Arena, with tipoff at 3:00 PM.
