Baseball Drops Road Doubleheader at California (Pa.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team used some big offensive plays in the twinbill but could not cash in on a win on Sunday (March 1) at Wild Things Park against the California (Pa.) Vulcans.

Walsh used a six-run seventh inning in game one, falling 12-8 and California (Pa.) walked off in extra innings, 4-3 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

California (Pa.) used a four-run first inning to jump ahead of Walsh out of the gate. In the fourth inning, Joey Holiga ripped a triple into the left-center field gap with one out. Two batters later, Avery Janning plated Holiga with a RBI single as the Cavaliers began to claw away. One inning later, Cam Kaiser singled to leadoff the frame and scored on a RBI double by Jarret Lyon. Lyon's double made it 4-2 Vulcans entering the bottom of the fifth. The Vulcans answered with six runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth, opening an 12-2 lead with three outs to go for the Cavaliers. Kaiser started the rally with a line-drive triple to left center before Lyon scored him with a RBI single. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with a walk and a single, all with one out. Holiga cleared the bases with a three-run double before Brenden Spaulding wrapped a two-run homer around the left field foul pole. Nine men stepped to the plate, accounting for six runs on five hits but the rally fell short, 12-8.

The Cavaliers totaled ten hits in game one with three players having multi-hit games. Holiga had two extra base hits (a double and triple) with three RBI and two runs scored. Kaiser singled twice and scored both times. Lyon singled and doubled with two runs batted in.

GAME TWO

Just like the first game, the Vulcans drew first blood with a two-spot in the first inning as they jumped in front. Walsh answered with a pair of runs in the second inning to tie the game. Kaiser was hit by a pitch and Lyon hammered a two-run home run to left field, his first round-tripper of the year. California (Pa.) retained the 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. With the Cavaliers trailing by one run and down to their final out, Jacob Beachy tied the game at three with a solo homer to left field. California (Pa.) won the game with a walk-off single in the eighth inning, sweeping Sunday 4-3.

Four different players had a hit with two of them being home runs for Walsh.

Drew Saunier pitched six innings with three runs (two earned) allowed on five hits and two walks in a no-decision.

Walsh and California (Pa.) will close the series on Monday (March 2) with a single nine-inning game at 11:00 AM at Wild Things Park.
