NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Saturday (Jan. 23) saw the Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team hit a number of milestones and marks as they defeated the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots 112-53 at Alumni Arena. Walsh improved to 6-3 overall and in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The short story: Walsh controlled the tempo for the duration of the contest, beginning with the first quarter. Walsh scored the first eight points over the opening three minutes of the game. Ohio Valley cut the lead in half, trailing 8-4 with 6:37 left in the opening period. Over the final six minutes of the first quarter, Walsh opened a 27-6 lead with a 17-0 run at one point. Walsh continued to create a larger deficit throughout the game, taking a 34-point lead into halftime, a 45-point lead after three periods and a 59-point lead at the conclusion.
OPENING TIP
- Lexie Scarton obtained her first career triple-double while also tying Walsh's single game assist record. She finished the game with 16 points, 12 assists, and ten rebounds. Scarton shot six-of-12 for the game while making four-of-six free throws.
- Mayci Sales finished the game with a team-high 32 points, 17 rebounds along with four assists. A double-double was almost guaranteed for Sales as she had 11 points and eight rebounds at the end of the first Quarter. Sales dominated on the floor, making 14 of the 18 shots she attempted. The 32 points were a career-high while the 17 rebounds tied her previous best.
- Sha Carter recorded her second double-double of the season. She had 18 points, ten rebounds, four assists and two steals. Carter shot eight-of-15 for the game. She also made her only attempted three pointer and free throw.
- Megan Ball and Abby Hickey were also in double-figures with ten and 15 points, respectively.
- The difference was that the Cavs led the Fighting Scots in every category of the game. They played with energy, rebounded as a team and got everyone involved.
- Every starter for the Cavs scored in double figures and players like Alyssa Dean provided the energy off the bench. Dean scored 8 points and was a menace on defense tallying 6 steals.
- Walsh dominated scoring in the paint, as they scored 70 points of their 112 down low.
- They also dominated the glass, out-rebounding Ohio Valley 63-21 while having 28 offensive rebounds as a team.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- The Cavs finished the game shooting a season-high 54% (47-87) for the game while holding Ohio Valley to 33.3% (21-63) shooting.
- The Cavs converted on their second chance opportunities, scoring 33 points on second chance points after grabbing 28 offensive rebounds.
- All five starters scored in double figures, combining for 91 of 112 total points.
- Walsh finished with 23 assists compared to Ohio Valley who finished with just three.
NOTABLE
- Lexie Scarton's triple-double was the first Walsh triple-double in the D2 era and as of this writing, the first since at least 1992.
- Scarton's 12 assists tied the program record set three times before (Danita Fink, 1983-84; Jill Hanigofsky, 1989-90 & Laurie Haller, 1989-90).
- Today's win was the largest margin of victory for the Cavs this season and set D2 era records for points scored (112) and rebounds (63).
- Mayci Sales took over the eighth spot on Walsh's all time scorers with 1,324 points.
- Sha Carter took over the 12th spot on Walsh's all time scorers with 1,245 points.
- This was the third time in the Kate Bruce era, where Walsh has scored over 100 points.
- The last time that Walsh reached 112+ points was 11/22/2003 vs. Ursuline (113-39).
