NORTH CANTON, Ohio - After trailing by eight in the second quarter, the Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team defeated the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers 63-49 on Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon. The win has extended their win streak to three games. The Cavs avenged a loss four weeks ago and tied up the season series at one game apiece.

The short story: Although there was limited attendance, the energy throughout the game could compare with a sold out Alumni Arena. The Cavs started off slow and were not able to find their offense. At the end of the first quarter, Walsh was down 15-10. Kentucky Wesleyan extended their lead and was ahead 21-13 midway through the second quarter. Megan Ball and Sha Carter combined for their next 10 points as the Cavs went on a 15-5 run to end the half. During that run, Abby Hickey drilled a corner three to give Walsh the 26-25 lead. Walsh led 28-26 at halftime. After half, Walsh was able to answer anything Kentucky Wesleyan threw at them. The Cavs held on to their lead all the way to the finish, 63-49.
OPENING TIP
- Sha Carter was one of three Cavaliers in double figures. She scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half. She made nine shots on 15 attempts. Carter was also active on defense, she finished with four steals.
- Mayci Sales found herself in foul trouble early. That led her to not find a rhythm until the 2nd half. At the end of the 1st Half, Sales was one-of-five and had only two points. In the 2nd half, Sales started to find the bottom of the net as she scored ten of her 12 points in the 2nd half. Sales also finished with seven rebounds, the game-high three blocks, and two steals.
- Megan Ball finished the game with 17 points. She made six of her eight attempts. Ball also brought down six rebounds, including three offensive boards.
THE DIFFERENCE
- Walsh held the Panthers to just 18-of-60 (30%) for the game, a season-low for the Panthers. The Cavs also held the Panthers to just four-of-23 (17.4%) from the three point line.
- Walsh outrebounded Kentucky Wesleyan 37-31, including eight offensive boards. Scarton and Sales led the team with seven rebounds each.
- Walsh shot 80% (8-10) in the third quarter. In that same quarter, the Cavs held the Panthers to 20% shooting (3-15).
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Only three Cavaliers scored in double figures and they combined for 49 of their 63 points. Only six of the eight Cavaliers that played managed to score points.
- The Cavs once again found their offense down low as Walsh finished with 36 points in the paint.
- The last time the Cavs did not have the lead came in the 2nd Quarter with 49 seconds left on the clock. Their largest lead of the night, 14, came in with 34 seconds left on the game clock.
NOTABLE
- Sha Carter's 20 point performance puts her at 11th in the all time scoring leaders. Sha currently has 1,265 points and next spot up is Samantha Pack with 1,281 points.
- Today's win ties the season series with Kentucky Wesleyan at one win each and puts the Cavaliers at 3rd in the G-MAC conference.
