Box Score 4 CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team opened the 2021 conference slate with four games against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets over the weekend. Walsh improved to 5-2 on the season after they took three of four games from the Yellow Jackets in Xenia and Cedarville, Ohio.
Walsh used 25 runs on Friday (March 12) as they swept the first day of the series while the teams split the second day on Saturday (March 13).
Friday 3/12
Game 1 (W, 6-4 in 9 innings)
- Walsh jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after the Cavaliers loaded the bases with three walks. A run scored on an error before Cobe Hutchison singled home a pair of runs in the first frame. Cedarville scored one run in the first and three in the fourth for a 4-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Walsh rallied back with a two-run inning. Hutchison tied the game at four and Matt McGrath put Walsh up 5-4 with a RBI single. Jarret Lyon capped the scoring with a solo blast to right field in the seventh inning.
- Walsh had seven hits and five walks in the first game of the series. Hutchison reached base three times with two hits and three RBI. Five other players had hits in the game.
- Drew Saunier allowed four runs in seven innings in his start. He scattered nine hits and one walk while striking out five. Dylan Corsi and Josh Ferry each threw a scoreless inning of relief work.
Game 2 (W, 19-7 in 7 innings)
- Cedarville used a five run inning in the first as they opened a 5-0 lead. Walsh began to chip away at the lead with a two-run second inning. Ben Lefebvre and Joey Holiga both walked with the bases loaded as the lead was cut to three. The Yellow Jackets turned the lead into a 6-2 advantage after two innings with a run in the second. The Cavaliers scored 17 straight runs between the third and seventh innings. Brenden Spaulding homered in the third inning as the score turned to 6-3. In a seven-run fifth inning, Lyon and Davis Burick had RBI singles and Andrew Czech blasted a grand slam for the Cavaliers as they took a 10-6 lead. Walsh added eight more runs on four hits in the sixth for an 18-6 lead. Hutchison walked with the bases loaded before Burick doubled home a pair of runners. Lefebvre followed with a two-run triple and Spaulding finished the frame with his second blast of the day, a three-run shot to left field. In the final inning, Burick singled home his fourth run of the game as Walsh won 19-7.
- As a team, Walsh had 12 hits and ten walks. Spaulding had three hits (two homers), scored three runs and was one of four players to drive in four runs. Lefebvre got on base four times (three walks) and scored two runs with three RBI.
- Burick was three-of-five with two runs and four RBI. Czech totaled four RBI and two runs. Lyon scored three runs and Alec Debruler walked three times.
Saturday 3/13
Game 1 (W, 7-3 in 7 innings)
- Walsh used a big inning late to win the game after being tied late. Lyon started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a RBI single from Lefebvre as Walsh led 2-0 after two innings. Cedarville used a two-run fifth inning as the game was tied with two innings to go. Czech broke the 2-2 tie with a RBI double to right field. Spaulding singled home a run, Debruler added a two-run single and Hutchison closed out the scoring with a RBI single. The Yellow Jackets bounced back with a run in the seventh but Walsh held on for a 7-3 win.
- Spaulding, Cam Kaiser, Lyon and Hutchison all had two hits for Walsh.
- Brant Alazaus tossed five innings of two-run ball (one earned). He allowed eight hits, one walk and fanned six batters.
Game 2 (L, 5-4 in 9 innings)
- Cedarville took a 4-0 lead with three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning. Lyon cut the lead in half with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Spaulding and Joey Holiga used RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively to tie the game at four. Cedarville walked off on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, winning the game and avoiding the sweep 5-4.
- Holiga had two of six Walsh hits while Czech, Spaulding, Lyon and Hutchison each had one hit. Kaiser walked four times in the game out of five plate appearances.
- Nick Lallathin allowed three runs in four innings as the starter. Todd Bangtson threw two scoreless innings of relief.
Walsh will host Findlay this weekend at Biery Stadium for the home opener. The series will begin Saturday (March 20) and will conclude Sunday (March 21).
