Strong Offense and Pitching Fuel Cavaliers Over Dragons

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team took on the Tiffin Dragons in a four-game Great Midwest series on Saturday (March 27) and Monday (March 29) at Biery Stadium. On the help of some key offensive moments and clutch pitching, Walsh improved to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in the G-MAC with three of four wins. 

Tiffin won the opening game of the series 4-3 in ten innings before Walsh took the Saturday nightcap 4-0. The Cavaliers won the Monday matinee matchups 9-1 and 5-0 against Tiffin to end the series. 

Saturday 3/27

Game 1 (L, 4-3 in 10 innings)

  • After five scoreless innings, Tiffin struck first with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Walsh cut the lead in half with a RBI single by Jarret Lyon in the bottom of the sixth. One inning later, Alec Debruler tied the game at two with a RBI single up the middle. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth inning as Tiffin scored first before Walsh tied it again on a RBI single from Brenden Spaulding. A single run in the top of the tenth was the difference as Tiffin took the series opener 4-3 in extra innings. 
  • Debruler went four-of-five with four singles while Spaulding reached base four times on three singles and a walk. Joey Holiga singled and scored twice in the game for the Cavaliers. 
  • Drew Saunier allowed two runs in six innings in his start. He scattered five hits while walking four and striking out five Dragons. 

Game 2 (W, 4-0 in 7 innings)

  • A four-run fourth inning gave the Cavaliers all the offense needed in the nightcap on Saturday. With the bases loaded, Ben Lefebvre reached on a fielder's choice that scored a run from third basxe. One batter later, Davis Burick launched a three-run home run to left field as Walsh gained a 4-0 lead. The pitching held up as Walsh completed a seven-inning shutout on just six hits. 
  • Cobe Hutchison and Holiga both had two hits in the contest as Holiga had one of the two Cavalier doubles. Burick accounted for three RBI with his blast. 
  • Hyatt Shenefield went 6.1 scoreless innings with six hits allowed and five strikeouts. Alex Firsdon came in and worked out of a one out jam with runners in scoring position for a save as he got the final two outs. 

Monday 3/29

Game 1 (W, 9-1 in 7 innings)

  • Walsh used some timely offense early in Monday's first game with eight runs scored in the first four innings. Lyon and Lefebvre broke through with a RBI single and RBI double, respectively in the second inning as Walsh led 2-0. In the third inning, Andrew Czech delivered a solo home run to the trees in right-center field, his third home run of the year. On the help of four hits, Walsh piled on six runs in the fourth inning. Holiga and Spaulding both had two-run doubles in the frame while Debruler plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Anthony Jackson doubled in a run. Tiffin capped the scoring in the top of the sixth inning with a run but it was Walsh winning 9-1. 
  • Spaulding, Jackson and Lefebvre all had two hits for Walsh with a double. Overall, eight of the nine batters had a hit and scored a run while seven of them drove in at least one run.
  • Brant Alazaus tossed seven innings of one-run ball on eight hits and he struck out six batters for a complete-game. 

Game 2 (W, 5-0 in 9 innings)

  • Hutchison started the scoring in the fourth inning with a two-run single to center field. Two innings later, Czech struck again with a three-run home run to right center field as the Cavaliers won 5-0 to end the series. 
  • Hutchison, Holiga and Jacob Beachy all had two hits as Hutchison reached base five times on two walks and a hit by pitch. Czech drove in three and was walked three times in the game. 
  • Caleb Canter, Nick Lallathin and Dylan Corsi combined for a four-hit shutout. Canter threw two innings of scoreless ball as Lallathin followed with 4.2 innings in relief with one hit, two walks and six strikeouts. Corsi finished the game with 2.1 innings. 

Walsh will travel to Hillsdale this weekend for a four-game series. The series will begin Friday (April 2) and will conclude Saturday (April 3) due to the Easter holiday.
