Box Score 3 WASHINGTON, Pa. - As the Walsh Cavaliers baseball team played their first games in the last 365 days, the Cavaliers pulled a series win out against the California (Pa.) Vulcans on Sunday (March 7) and Monday (March 8).
The teams split the doubleheader on Sunday at Wild Things Park before Walsh took the series finale on Monday.
Sunday 3/8
Game 1 (W, 7-4 in 10 innings)
- Walsh rallied from down 4-0 in the opening game of the season to win in extra innings. The Vulcans scored two runs in the first and fourth innings as they held a 4-0 lead entering the middle innings. Using a three-run sixth inning, Walsh trimmed the lead to 4-3. Cam Kaiser and Cobe Hutchison both homered to left field in the inning while Andrew Czech walked in a run with the bases loaded. One inning later, Hutchison tied the game at four with a RBI single. The game was tied into the tenth inning when Czech hammered a three-run blast to the deepest part of the ballpark. Walsh bounced back for a 7-4 win in the opener.
- Walsh totaled ten hits as a team with 11 walks. Czech reached base five times, including four walks on the day with four RBI. Hutchison had two hits and two RBI in the six slot in the lineup. Joey Holiga walked twice in the opening game.
- Drew Saunier pitched six solid innings with four runs allowed in the start. The righty allowed four runs on five hits with one walk and a career-high ten strikeouts. Hyatt Shenefield tossed four scoreless innings of relief as he gave up three singles and struck out three batters.
Game 2 (L, 6-1)
- California (Pa.) added two runs in the first inning and four in the second as they led 6-0 early on. Holiga broke the shutout with a solo shot to left in the sixth inning as Walsh fell 6-1 in the seven-inning contest.
- Holiga reached basse three times off two hits and one walk. Kaiser and Hutchison each singled for Walsh while Czech walked for the fifth time on Sunday.
- After the starter allowed six runs, the Cavaliers bullpen of Dylan Corsi (1.2 IP), Zach Thompson, Pat Coleman and Todd Bangston combined for 5.2 scoreless innings of relief with one hit, one walk and five punchouts.
Monday 3/9 (W, 5-2)
- On the sixth pitch of the day, Holiga went deep for the second time in as many games as Walsh jumped out to a 1-0 lead. While batting in the fifth inning, Kaiser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jarret Lyon followed with a two-run double as Walsh pushed the lead to 4-0. Cal (Pa.) added runs in the sixth and seventh, cutting the lead to 4-2. Jared Lieberman gave Walsh an insurance run in the eighth with a RBI triple. The Cavaliers improved to 2-1 with a 5-2 win.
- Lieberman had two of Walsh's six hits in the game as Holiga reached base another three times with a homer and two walks, while also scoring two runs.
- Brant Alazaus went six innings with one run allowed on two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. Alex Firsdon and Josh Ferry completed scoreless innings of work as Ferry got the save.
Walsh takes a 2-1 record into conference play at Cedarville, beginning on Friday (March 12).
