Box Score 2 MASON, Ohio - Following an opening round win over Cedarville on Wednesday (May 12) afternoon, the Walsh Cavaliers baseball team saw the 2021 season come to a close on Thursday (May 13) with a pair of losses at Legacy Field on the campus of PRASCO Park.
Walsh dropped a winner's bracket matchup to Hillsdale 9-7 before bowing out in a 9-6 loss to Tiffin in the consolation bracket.
Game 1 vs. Hillsdale (L, 9-7)
- Hillsdale scored runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead over the Cavaliers. Jacob Beachy cut the lead to 2-1 with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. After a single and a hit batter, Andrew Czech delivered a three-run home run to right field to give Walsh a 4-2 lead. One inning later, Cobe Hutchison added on with a RBI double as Walsh pushed the lead to 5-2 after five innings. A five-run Hillsdale seventh gave the Chargers a 7-5 lead before Hillsdale added on two more runs in the top of the ninth. Walsh had two runners reach on singles in the bottom of the ninth. Brenden Spaulding brought in a pair of runs with a double to right center field. Walsh fell 9-7 with the tying run on deck.
- Walsh pounded out 13 hits in the game with the top four batters in the order each with a multi-hit game. Spaulding had four hits including three doubles and two RBI. Czech totaled three hits with a home run and three RBI. Hutchison and Joey Holiga both had two hits in the contest for the Cavaliers.
- Drew Saunier allowed six runs in six innings with four strikeouts as the starter.
Game 2 vs. Tiffin (L, 9-6)
- Tiffin struck first in the top of the first with a pair of runs as they drew first blood on the scoreboard. Cam Kaiser responded in the bottom half of the first inning with a RBI single to left field. The teams exchanged runs in the third inning as Tiffin scored first before a Andrew Czech solo home run to right field in the bottom of the third. Tiffin led 3-2 after three innings. A three-run fifth inning for the Dragons made it 6-2 at the midway point of the contest. The Cavaliers began to claw back in the fifth and sixth innings. Batting with the bases loaded, Czech lifted a fly ball to left field deep enough for a sacrifice fly. Spaulding followed with a ground rule double over the left-center field fence to plate one. Walsh scored two in the fifth and made it 6-4. A safety squeeze by Davis Burick and a RBI single by Hutchison tied the game at six with three innings to go. Tiffin scored three in the top half of the ninth inning to advance and send the Cavaliers home.
- Ben Lefebvre and Hutchison each had two hits while four other players had one hit. Lefebvre also scored two runs on his own.
Walsh ended the season at 27-14 overall.
