Walsh Notches Upset of #20 Hillsdale, 76-52

HILLSDALE, Michigan - For the eighth time in the Division II era, the Walsh Cavaliers pulled off an upset of a nationally ranked team following a 76-52 win over the #20/#21 Hillsdale Chargers on Thursday (Jan. 6) night at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. Hillsdale was ranked #20 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches poll and #21 in the D2SIDA Media Poll.

Hillsdale scored the first basket of the game before Walsh went on a 18-3 run over the next nine minutes. Walsh pushed the lead to 30-14 with 6:52 in the first half on a Darryl Straughter layup. Hillsdale made it a seven-point game with a 10-1 run at the end of the first half. Walsh led 31-24 after 20 minutes. Walsh expanded the lead to double-digits quickly in the second half and pulled away to as many as 28 points over the Chargers.

FOR THE CAVALIERS:

  • Darryl Straughter led the Cavaliers with 18 points on eight-of-12 shooting in the game as he added nine rebounds and four assists. 
  • Garrison Keeslar was another player in double figures with 17 points. He made five field goals with seven free throws to go with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. 
  • Caleb Canter converted six-of-nine field goals for 12 points and eight rebounds. 
  • Milan Square and Tim Smith Jr. both had eight points in the contest. 
  • The Cavaliers shot 47.6% in the game with 30-of-63 field goals made. Walsh was 40% of three-point shots, connecting on six three pointers. 
  • Walsh outrebounded the Chargers 44-32 in the game. 

FOR THE CHARGERS:

  • Patrick Cartier, the conference's leading scorer, was limited to 12 points against the Cavaliers. 
  • Noah Applegate and Joe Reuter both scored nine points off the bench. 
  • Tavon Brown was the leading rebounder with six boards. 
  • Hillsdale was held to 29.6% shooting and 52 points, well below their season average. The Chargers made 16-of-54 shots overall and was five-of-29 from the three-point arc. 

After Saturday's postponement at Findlay, Walsh will travel to Cedarville next Thursday (Jan. 13) for a Great Midwest matchup with the Yellow Jackets at 7:45 PM.
