Cavaliers Drop Openers to #12 Griffins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team saw the 2022 season open on Sunday (Feb. 27) with a pair of losses to the #12 Seton Hill Griffins.

Walsh fell on a walk-off in the opener, 3-2 before a four-run sixth inning proved fatal in the game two. Seton Hill won 5-2 in the nightcap.

Game 1 (L, 3-2, 7 innings)

  • After a leadoff walk and double, Walsh took the lead 2-0 with a two-run double by Austin Marko in the first inning. After a game-tying homer in the bottom of the second, the game was tied at two through the middle of the seventh frame. With a runner on second base and two outs, Seton Hill won it on a lost popup in the air that landed in the middle of the diamond.
  • Walsh had four hits in the game, including doubles by Joey Holiga and Davis Burick
  • Drew Saunier allowed two runs in 4.2 innings with four strikeouts as the starter.

Game 2 (L, 5-2)

  • Seton Hill opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot to left field. A two-run fifth inning put Walsh up 2-1 with the final innings to come. Burick and Brady Maciak got Walsh going with singles and both runners advanced into scoring position with a wild pitch and stolen base, respectively. A RBI fielder's choice by Jared Lieberman tied the game at one. Joey Holiga singled through the left side, scoring Maciak from second base. The Griffins used four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and eventually the win. The big blow in the inning was a three-run double with the bases loaded. Walsh put two on with one out in the seventh but the tying run struck out twice looking at the dish.
  • Holiga had two hits with the only walk of the second game. Marko, Burick, Maciak and Lieberman all had one hit apiece.
  • Walsh stole three bases in the final game of the day.
  • Brant Alazaus allowed one run in four innings, with three punchouts in his first start of the year.

Walsh will play a three-game series at California (Pa.), starting on Friday (March 4).
