Box Score 4 OWENSBORO, Kentucky - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team continued conference play with a trip South to visit the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers on Sunday (March 20) and Monday (March 21).
Walsh fell 16-5 in the series opener before winning Sunday's nightcap 7-1. Monday's action saw Kentucky Wesleyan claim 4-3 and 11-10 wins on walk-offs as the Panthers won three of the four games in the Bluegrass State.
Sunday Game 1 (L, 16-5)
- After Kentucky Wesleyan scored one run in the first inning, Austin Marko tied the game with a solo home run to left center in the second. Kentucky Wesleyan added runs in five of the next six innings, including a seven-run seventh inning for a 16-1 lead. Walsh loaded the bases in the eighth with two hit batters and a walk. Cam Hollobaugh plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Pat Ciccantelli came off the bench and delivered a three-run blast in the ninth inning as Walsh fell 16-5.
- Walsh had seven hits in the first game as six different players had a hit. Jarret Lyon had two hits, including a double while Jacob Beachy walked three times.
Sunday Game 2 (W, 7-1)
- The offensive momentum at the end of the first game carried over to the second game. Walsh jumped out to an 6-0 lead in the first frame on five hits and a pair of errors. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with two singles and an error. Cameron Kaiser plated two runs with a single before Austin Marko doubled home two more runs. Davis Burick followed with a RBI single and Joey Holiga walked with the bases loaded. 12 batters later, Walsh led 6-0 in the first. Burick added a seventh run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly. The Panthers got a run in the bottom half of the seventh on a solo homerun. Walsh split the day 7-1.
- Kaiser had three hits and a walk to reach four times. Marko doubled twice in the game as he had the other multi-hit game.
- Brant Alazaus allowed one run in seven innings, scattering six hits with nine strikeouts.
Monday Game 1 (L, 4-3)
- Monday's first game remained scoreless until the fourth inning. After two quick outs for Walsh, three straight batters reached base. Brady Maciak singled home the first run of the game with runners at first and second base. In the sixth inning, Lyon took advantage of the high winds and drilled a two-run homer to center field. Walsh's lead grew to 3-0 as the game neared the end. Kentucky Wesleyan got two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run shot. The Panthers got two solo home runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, 4-3.
- Maciak had two hits as Walsh only managed five hits in the game. Three of the five hits were of extra-bases for Walsh.
- Cole Brogan started and pitched into the sixth inning. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts before coming out of the game.
Monday Game 2 (L, 11-10)
- The Panthers started on top with four runs in the first four innings. The Cavaliers tied the game in the fifth inning with a four-spot on three hits. Holiga and Kaiser doubled and walked, respectively with two outs in the frame. Maciak stepped up and cut the lead in half with a two-run double. One batter later, Lyon hit his second two-run home run of the day to center field. Kentucky Wesleyan battled back with three runs for a 7-4 lead. In the sixth inning, Walsh pulled within one with a pair of runs. Shea Simmer tallied a sacrifice fly and Ben Lefebvre added a RBI groundout as it was 7-6 after six innings. The back-and-forth game continued as Walsh gained an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning. Holiga plated a run with a RBI double and a wild pitch gave Walsh the lead. A three-run blast from KWC put the Panthers up 10-8 after eight innings. A pinch-hit two-run homer from Marko put Walsh even at 10-10 following an error by the Panthers. An RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave KWC their second walk-off win of the day.
- Holiga, Kaiser, Maciak and Lyon all had two hits. Walsh had five doubles and two home runs of their 11 hits. Kaiser walked twice for a game with four times on base.
Walsh will play a four-game series vs. Malone at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium, starting on Friday (March 25).
