Walsh Defeats Malone in Late Night Affair

Box Score

CANTON, Ohio - With the last two games of the Malone series postponed last month, the Walsh Cavaliers baseball team played the Malone Pioneers in an under the lights affair on Tuesday (April 12) night.

Walsh outlasted Malone 4-3 in an 11-inning contest at Thurman Munson Stadium. The Cavaliers are now 15-11 overall and 7-6 in the G-MAC.

Malone struck first on a RBI double in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead against the Cavaliers.

Walsh bounced back in the second inning with two runs and a chance for more runs. Cameron Kaiser walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Jacob Beachy delivered a two-run blast to left field. The Cavs continued to load the bases with a single, double and walk. Malone escaped with a 2-1 deficit as the game shifted to the third inning when the Pioneers tied the game at two with a RBI single.

In the sixth inning, Walsh regained the lead with three straight hits. After Ben Lefebvre and Matt McGrath singled, Andrew Morse brought home Lefebvre with a RBI single. A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases later in the inning but the score remained 3-2.

Malone tied the game for the second time in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

Walsh walked the tightrope in the bottom of the ninth inning as the bases were loaded with one out before Alex Beyerle struck out the last two batters. The score was tied 3-3 as the game went to extra innings.

After a scoreless tenth inning, the Maroon and Gold pushed across the game-winning run. Joey Holiga opened the inning with a double and Jarret Lyon singled him home for the game-winner.

The Cavaliers won the hit battle 14-10 as four players had multi-hit games. McGrath went four-for-five with three singles and a double. Brady Maciak, Beachy and Lefebvre all had a pair of hits for the evening.

Nick Lallathin started the game and gave Walsh five innings of two-run baseball. The southpaw scattered four hits and three walks while walking eight strikeouts. Todd Bangtson and Nik Barkdull each tallied a perfect inning. Beyerle went 3.1 innings with two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Cavaliers are heading to Ashland for a G-MAC series with the Eagles on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The action begins at 4:00 PM on Thursday.
