Box Score 4 ASHLAND, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team went to Ashland and competed in a four-game series spanning three days.
Walsh dropped three of four contests, despite hitting 11 home runs and tallying 15 extra-base hits. Walsh is now 16-14 overall and 8-9 in the G-MAC.
Thursday 4/14 (L, 15-10)
- Jarret Lyon put the Cavaliers on the board in the first inning with a RBI single, plating Brady Maciak, who doubled. A solo Ashland home run in the second inning tied the game at one. Matt McGrath broke the 1-1 tie with a solo blast in the fourth inning as Walsh led 2-1. The Eagles responded with six runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-2 lead. Lyon and Jacob Beachy went deep in the fifth inning as the deficit closed to 7-4 at the halfway point. A seven-run sixth inning lifted Ashland to a 14-4 lead. In the seventh inning, Walsh clawed back with five runs crossing the plate. Cam Hollobaugh singled home a run with the bases loaded before Beachy and Andrew Morse followed with a pair of two-run doubles. Maciak homered in the eighth inning as Walsh made it 14-10 as the game headed to the bottom of the eighth. Ashland completed the scoring with a RBI single in the bottom. Ashland won the game 15-10.
- Walsh had 13 hits in the game with five multi-hit games. Lyon had three hits and walked once to reach base four times. Beachy, McGrath, Maciak and Morse all had two hits each.
- Walsh homered four times with seven extra-base hits.
Friday 4/15 Game 1 (W, 10-2)
- Friday's game started with Ashland taking the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. McGrath drilled the first of two home runs in the second inning, a three-run blast to left center. One inning later, Joey Holiga homered to left center for a Walsh 4-1 lead. Cameron Kaiser doubled home two runs in the fifth inning as Walsh led 6-1. McGrath hit his second home run of the game in the sixth inning. The Eagles broke the run with a run in the sixth but Walsh still led 7-2. A three-run seventh capped the game as a wild pitch and a two-run Lyon blast gave Walsh a 10-2 win in the doubleheader opener.
- Holiga was four-of-four in the game as Walsh totaled nine hits. McGrath had two homers with four RBIs.
- Brant Alazaus pitched all seven innings with two runs allowed on six hits. He fanned ten batters.
Friday 4/15 Game 2 (L, 6-5)
- For the second time in the series, Ashland led first with a run in the first inning. An error on a McGrath double tied the game in the second inning. Maciak's first home run of the day put the Cavaliers up 2-1 in the top of the third. Two Ashland runs in the third gave Ashland back a 3-2 lead after three innings. A wild pitch and a RBI single by Maciak put Walsh back on top 4-3. Ashland tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run single. Maciak cut the lead in half with his second solo shot of the day in the sixth inning. Ashland won the second game on Friday 6-5.
- Maciak had three hits of the ten for the team. Lyon and McGrath both had two hit games. Ben Lefebvre reached base twice and scored both times.
- Zach Thompson followed starter Cole Brogan with a scoreless sixth inning.
Saturday (L, 13-3)
- After Ashland scored the first 13 runs with five multi-run innings, Walsh got on the board in the 9th inning. Shea Simmer took a pitch deep to center field, a three-run shot to make it 13-3.
- Jared Lieberman had three singles in the game while Lefebvre had two hits and a walk.
Walsh will makeup the final Ohio Dominican game on Wednesday (April 20) at 3:30 PM before heading to Findlay next weekend.
