Box Score CANTON, Ohio - It may have taken nearly 35 days but the Walsh Cavaliers baseball team was able to finish the road series against the Malone Pioneers on Wednesday (April 27) evening at Thurman Munson Stadium.
Walsh completed a series sweep of the Pioneers by a 10-3 score on Wednesday. The Cavaliers improved to 21-16 overall and 12-11 in the G-MAC with eight games to go.
In the first inning, Walsh struck first with three runs across the plate. Shea Simmer walked and moved to second on a Brady Maciak single. A passed ball and a stolen base by Maciak put runners in scoring position. Joey Holiga grounded out for the first run as Simmer scored. Jacob Beachy and Austin Marko singled home runs as Walsh led 3-0.
The Cavaliers added three more runs in the fourth as they pushed the lead to 6-0. Marko walked and stole second base before Cameron Kaiser walked. A fielding error off the bat of Ben Lefebvre allowed one run to score. After Andrew Morse was hit by a pitch, Simmer singled home two runs with a single through the right side.
Malone scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 6-2.
Another three-run frame for Walsh broke the game open if it wasn't already in the seventh inning. Maciak opened the inning with a walk and Holiga followed with a single. Jarret Lyon singled home Maciak while Holiga moved to third on an obstruction call. Beachy got another run with a sacrifice fly. Lyon stole second and advanced on a single by Marko. With runners on the corners, Kaiser put down the safety squeeze to score Lyon. After the third three-run inning, Walsh led 9-2 at the stretch.
In the bottom of the seventh, Malone closed the gap to 9-3 before the Cavaliers responded. Morse and Simmer walked as Malone uncorked a couple of wild pitches. For the second straight frame, Holiga added a sacrifice fly.
Walsh was victorious 10-3 over the Pioneers with ten hits in the game. Marko had three hits and one walk to reach base four times, including the only extra-base hit. Lyon had two hits and two runs scored. Seven of the starters got hits in the contest.
Nik Barkdull started and went four innings with two runs allowed. He surrendered five hits and struck out three Pioneers. Nick Lallathin followed with five innings of one-run ball.
Walsh will host #12 Trevecca Nazarene this weekend as a part of the final nine-game homestand. The Trojans come to town on Friday (April 29) and Saturday (April 30).
