Cavaliers Split Road DH with Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - As the Walsh Cavaliers baseball team continued their PSAC swing, the Cavaliers battled the Rock of Slippery Rock University in a doubleheader on Tuesday (April 5). 

Walsh split the day with an 8-2 loss in game one and a 10-6 victory in the nightcap. The Cavaliers return to conference play with a 13-9 overall record. 

Game 1 (L, 8-2)

  • Slippery Rock started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning before adding six more runs between the third and fourth innings.
  • Walsh scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to cap the scoring. Davis Burick singled and Andrew Morse followed with a double to left field. Joey Holiga plated Burick with a sacrifice fly to center field. After a single, Morse crossed the plate on a wild pitch for an 8-2 score. Walsh loaded the bases two batters later but left them loaded to end the game. 
  • Burick, Morse and Cameron Kaiser all had two hits in the game while Brady Maciak reached base three times (two walks). 
  • Walsh totaled nine hits with a pair of doubles in the opening contest. 
  • Cam Lingle allowed one run in 1.2 innings while Caleb Canter tossed a scoreless inning of relief work. 

Game 2 (W, 10-6)

  • Walsh struck first in the second inning with a three-spot on the board. Jacob Beachy doubled home Burick, who walked, for a 1-0 lead. Beachy came around to score on a RBI single from Ben Lefebvre. Lefebvre stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Joey Holiga RBI single. Two walks later, the Cavaliers had the bases loaded with two outs but no more runs scored. 
  • Three third inning doubles pushed the Cavaliers lead to 5-0. Jarret Lyon opened the inning with a double and scampered to third on a fly out. Burick and Beachy followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. 
  • The offensive momentum continued into the fourth inning with three more runs. Kaiser and Jarret Lyon both hit solo home runs and Beachy tallied an RBI double to score McGrath, who doubled. 
  • Slippery Rock hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning, making it 8-3. 
  • Walsh made it 10-3 in the fifth inning on two runs. Lefebvre walked and stole second before Kaiser walked again. Maciak singled home Lefebvre and Kaiser scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat. 
  • The Rock ended the sixth inning with a three-run double to close the gap to 10-6. 
  • Beachy had three hits in the game, including a pair of doubles. Lefebvre, Holiga and Lyon all had two hits. Kaiser walked four times along with his home run. 
  • Nik Barkdull returned from injury to pick up the win as he tossed a scoreless first inning. Tyler Giesige, Brandon Cahill and Zach Thompson all pitched scoreless innings in relief. 

Walsh will host Ohio Dominican on Thursday (April 7) and Sunday (April 10) for G-MAC doubleheaders, beginning at 1:00 PM.
