WOMEN'S LACROSSE OPEN SEASON AGAINST #8 RANKED GREYHOUNDS

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA- The Walsh University Women's Lacrosse team opened up their 2023 season against the #8 ranked Greyhounds from the University of Indianapolis. The Cavaliers fell short of a season opening win 9-15 on Saturday at Key Stadium.

RECORDS: Walsh (0-1), UIndy (2-0)

FOR THE CAVALIERS:
  • Kathleen Coomes connected on the first goal of the season for the Cavs in the second quarter.
  • Coomes' unassisted goal would propel the Cavalier offense before heading into the half. 
  • Melinda Maers added goal number two for the maroon and gold at the six minute mark. The combo of Maers and Coomes was the life of the Cavalier offense. 
  • Coomes and Maers would each connect for their second goal of the half making the score 4-8.
  • Goals five, six and seven came quickly for the Cavaliers in the third quarter from the trio of King, Heighway and Kelty.
  • Carly King scored on an assisted goal from Grace Heighway just under twelve minutes.
  • Grace Heighway had her chance on goal with an assist from Isabella Kelty.
  • Isabella Kelty then connected to the back of the net with help from teammate Rachel Black.
  • A late push in the fourth by the Cavs with goals from Carly King, unassisted, and Melinda Maers left the Cavs just short as the clock ran down.
  • Kathleen Mendenhall tallied 17 total saves for the Cavaliers. 
The Maroon and Gold head to Erie, Pennsylvania to take on Mercyhurst next Saturday ( February 25 ) at 12:00pm.
