DETROIT, MI: Walsh Tennis faced a challenging, cold, and windy weekend in Michigan, taking on top 30 national opponents in Wayne State and University of Indianapolis. Despite a long travel and a tough slate of matches, several Cavaliers delivered standout performances and earned points for Walsh.Â
On Saturday, freshman Ross Trias battled a 2025 ITA winner from Great Britain in a grueling three-set match at No.1. Trias claimed the opening set 6/4 and built a 4/1 lead in the second, putting his opponent under serious pressure. Experience ultimately proved decisive, and after more than two hours on court, Trias narrowly fell in three sets, 6/4, 4/6, 2/6. Fine margins decided the match for another Spanish player, Joan Dasi, who suffered a narrow loss after three intense sets: 2/6, 6/1, 3/6. Ben Hoffman and Nicolas Stroehle delivered a convincing doubles win: 6/4. At No. 5 singles, Ethan Milgan earned a hard-fought three-set win. The men's team lost 6/1 and 7/0.Â
On the women's side, Taira Abildayeva proved her fighting spirit, pushing all the way in demanding three-set encounters against top opposition at No. 1 singles. Lina Starke secured a crucial point for Walsh with a strong three-set win at No. 2 singles, 5/7, 6/2, 6/3. Paired with Aleksandra Chmir in doubles, the duo won 6–4 against Wayne State. The women's team results included loses versus Wayne State and 6-1 against U Indy.Â
While the results were tough, the weekend demonstrated that Walsh players are capable of competing with the nation's top programs through hard work, resilience, and perseverance. Next stop, Walsh will travel to Ferris State and Davenport this weekend.Â
