Cavs Fall to SVSU in GLIAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

(UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.) – In a valiant attempt to pull off a major upset,  No. 6 Walsh fell short in a 5-2 decision to host and No. 3-seed Saginaw Valley in the quarterfinal of the 2013 GLIAC Tournament. The Cavaliers (5-11-1) led by a score at halftime, but the Cardinals (10-3-5) spoiled the Cavs' bid with three second half goals.

With the game scoreless for most of the first third, the Cavs reached the scoring column first on a header by Brandon Gathagan (Fr., Copley, OH/HS). The opportunity came on a set play, Walsh's modus operandi all season, from a corner kick by Chad Dickerhoof (Sr., Alliance, OH/Marlington). The Cardinals didn't miss a beat, however, and quickly tied the game with a score by Jordan Kalk from six yards out on a rebounded shot by Vaughn Frederick just over a minute later at 30:13.

Just before halftime, Walsh again went up on a goal by Marco Pavlek (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak). The shot was taken from 15 yards out to the keeper's right side at 40:38 to seemingly give the Cavs momentum going into the break.

Saginaw Valley changed that around with an equalizer a little over three minutes into the second half Mitch Reinhart on the assist from Lachlan Savage. SVSU scored again on an unassisted goal by Craig Neal to go up 3-2 in the 55th. Walsh was unable to recover as the Cardinals added another pair of goals at 68:10 and 72:30.

Justin Nolan (Sr., Medina, OH/Highland) finished the day with five saves to finish the year with a GLIAC-best 108 stops. Nick Inglezakis (Sr., Stow, Monroe Falls) came in at 56:49 to finish out the game and came up with one save on the day.

SVSU now moves on to the semifinals to face No. 2 Tiffin in Columbus, Ohio on Friday.
