Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh closed the season on a high note with a 2-1 victory over rival Malone on a rain-soaked, muddy Milazzo Field Friday evening. The Cavaliers finish the season at 7-9 overall with a 5-9 GLIAC record. The Pioneers finish the year at 2-13-1 and 1-12-1 in the conference.
A pair of seniors factored into both goals for the Cavs for a fitting end to their collegiate careers on senior night. Despite the poor field conditions, the Cavs got the scoring started early as Bailey Moody scored on a brilliant assist from Brandon Frederick just 1:37 into the game. Frederick sent in the ball from just beyond the right side of the box to Moody who was perfectly placed in front of the net for his fourth goal of the year.
Malone's goal came next, but it wasn't a result of its offense. With players for both teams slipping everywhere, a misplayed ball by the Cavaliers' defense went into the net for an own goal in the 21st minute.
The tie wouldn't last too long as Walsh went ahead as Kain Melville scored the game-winning goal in the 30th minute. Simon Swales was credited with the assist after he had a couple of opportunities on goal, but Malone's goalkeeper Jon Crabbs made a pair of acrobatic saves. Melville was near the left post and was able to knock in the rebound.
Aside from the own goal, Ayman Youssef made some athletic saves himself and kept the Pioneers from scoring an equalizer as they pressured heavy late in the game. Malone only managed four shots on goal, but had 17 total shots with many missing barely wide with a couple going off the post. Youssef finishes the season 6-6 in goal.
Walsh outshot Malone 21-17 with a 15-5 advantage on shots in the first half. The Cavs also had an advantage in corner kicks at a 10-2 difference.
