Northwood Narrowly Defeats Cavs 5-4

(CANTON, Ohio) – The conference opener for the men's tennis team was about as close of a contest you could watch as Walsh was narrowly edged by Northwood 5-4. The Cavaliers (5-6, 0-1) played neck and neck with the Timberwolves (2-0, 1-0), but a three-set third singles match decided the outcome.

That match featured Ross Whittaker (So., Massillon, OH/Lake) take on Austin Woody. Whittaker lost the first set 6-4, but came back to win the second set 7-6 in thrilling fashion. The tiebreaker in the second set was quite lengthy, but Whittaker eventually forced a third set with an 18-16 win. The third set wasn't as kind to him, however, as Woody won 6-3 to decide the overall match.

Walsh actually held a 2-1 lead after doubles as Pablo Cabezon (Jr., Santander, Spain/Calasanz Collegue) and Whittaker teamed up for a 9-7 win at first doubles, and Vasily Vidmanov (Fr., Prague/Czech Republic/Russian Embassy School) and Jonah Carter (Fr., Maumee, OH/St. John's Jesuit) won 8-6 at third doubles.

Vidmanov was victorious at first singles as well with a pair of 6-4 sets. Carlos Jaque (Jr., Chujuayante/Lycee Charles de Gaulle) scored the other point for the Cavaliers with dual 7-6 sets.

Walsh returns to action in another GLIAC contest against Wayne State tomorrow. The Cavs host the Warriors at the Hall of Fame Courts in Canton at noon.
