Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The Walsh men's soccer team fell to Northern Michigan by a score of 2-1 on a warm Sunday afternoon. All three goals were scored in the first half as the Cavaliers dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the conference. The Wildcats improved to 4-7-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the GLIAC.
The visitors opened up the scoring with a goal in just the fifth minute as Kevin Hoof scored on an assist from Sveinn Karlsson. The Cavaliers scored the equalizer just three minutes later as Brett Sparks squeezed the ball just past the goal line before the NMU keeper grabbed the ball to tie the game at 1-1 in the seventh minute.
The tie stayed there until the 36th minute when Nick Metcalfe scored unassisted to give the 'Cats a 2-1 advantage.
Walsh had other chances to score, but Northern Michigan's Filippo Torelli made six saves on 12 shots faced.
On the opposite end, Jon-Paul Della Pia made five saves on the day before Tom Jackson took over in the second half and made three more.
Overall Northern Michigan edged Walsh in shots 15-12 and corner kicks 9-4.
Walsh now goes on the road to Michigan for the final time this season as it takes on Northwood and Saginaw Valley next weekend. Northwood is up first with kickoff between the Cavaliers and Timberwolves scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday.
