Men's Lacrosse Wins Thriller In Double-OT

Box Score

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The Walsh men's lacrosse team won its home opener in thrilling fashion with a 10-9 double-overtime victory over Roberts Wesleyan on a frigid Vasco Field on Wednesday. Ryan Martin's goal six seconds into the second extra period gave the Cavaliers (1-3) their first win of the season and handed the Redhawks (2-3) their third-straight defeat.

Ryan Rafac took and won the faceoff in the second overtime to give Walsh possession. He promptly passed it to Nicholas Castorf who then found Martin streaking down the middle of the field. Martin took a hit on the shot, but was still able to slip it past the goalie for his third goal of the game and fifth of the season.

The Cavaliers initially reached overtime after they took advantage of a Redhawks penalty. With Roberts Wesleyan up 9-8, Brady Bermingham was flagged for holding with 1:47 to go in the fourth. Frank Savena found Collin Trankel 19 seconds later for the equalizer.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game in the first overtime, but Dylan Ciolino came up with a couple of huge saves. He finished the game with 14 saves on 34 shots faced.

Alex Hudgens and Bryan Crim also had strong games on the offensive end with four points each. Hudgens scored three goals and an assists while Crim was split with two goals and two assists. Defensively Walsh was led by John Arnold with three caused turnover and five ground balls. Mark Guzik added three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Benjamin Suchomma tallied five ground balls.

The Cavaliers will look to make it two in a row as they host Tusculum on Tuesday afternoon. Faceoff is set for 2.
