Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – In a strongly defensively contested battle, Walsh fell to visiting Indianapolis by a 5-4 count in overtime at Vasco Field Saturday afternoon. It was the fourth overtime game of the season for the Cavaliers (4-7, 1-4) while it served as the first for the first-year Greyhounds (5-3, 2-1).
The nine goals scored in the game also serves as the lowest combined score in program history. The previous lowest combined score was 13 set twice last season in games at Roberts Wesleyan and Mercyhurst and once in the 2013-14 season against Ohio Valley.
The game featured four ties and four lead changes. Walsh struck first as it took advantage of a man-up opportunity with a goal by Nicholas Castorf on an assist from Alex Hudgens midway through the first quarter. It wasn't long until UIndy responded as James Smith scored with 6:37 left in the period to tie the game.
The Cavaliers regained the lead as Brydan Heisler scored just 43 seconds into the second quarter thanks to an assist from Ryan Martin, but the Greyhounds once again responded with a score, this time on a goal by Parker Kump on their own power play with 7:44 to go in the half. Indianapolis then took the lead as Kevin Spurlock found the back of the net on an assist from Smith with 1:31 left in the second quarter.
The Walsh offense struck a spark as it scored a pair of goals within 21 seconds near the beginning of the second half to regain the lead. Nicholas Castorf scored the equalizer before Zach Macaluso tip-toed the end line before he circled around to the left side of the goal and slipped a shot past the goalie for the go-ahead score.
Unfortunately for Walsh, it was the Cavs' finals score of the game. Smith added a second goal for UIndy to tie the game with 3:33 to go in the third. After a scoreless fourth quarter, the Greyhounds' Luke Allen scored the golden goal on an assist from Tyler Johnston.
Dylan Ciolino played an impressive game between the pipes as he came up with nine saves on 30 shots faced. He also added a pair of ground balls during the game as well.
Mark Guzik was also anchored a stout defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Benjamin Suchomma added four. On face-offs, Ryan Rafac had one of the best games of his career with eight wins in 11 chances.
Overall, Walsh secured a 28-22 advantage on ground balls.
Walsh will return to action a week from today for its penultimate home game of the season against Seton Hill. Face-off with the Griffins is scheduled for 12 p.m.
