Men's Tennis Falls to Fairmont State

(FAIRMONT, W.Va.) – The Walsh men's tennis team were upended 8-1 in non-conference regional action against Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers dropped to 7-11 overall, while the Falcons improved to 7-7 on the year.

The lone point for the Cavaliers came at third singles were Rodrigo Garcia was able to surpass Matias Higueras in a thriller. Garcia took the first set 7-6 with a narrow 7-5 tiebreaker before falling in the second 6-1. He was able to pull out the third-set tiebreaker 10-5.

The Cavaliers were close in the majority of matches played, but it seemed as though Fairmont State just had their number. Jonah Carter and Guilherme Carneiro were narrowly edged 9-8 at third doubles. Vasily Vidmanov forced a third set at first singles, but eventually fell 3-6, 7-5, 10-4. Carneiro faced a similar fate at fifth singles with a defeat by scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Filipp Kulynych was close to forcing a third set at second singles, but fell 7-5, 7-6 (9-7). Jonah Carter was also close at the sixth singles spot with a defeat by scores of 7-6 (10-8), 7-5.

Walsh returns to conference play a week from today as it hosts Cedarville at 1 p.m.
