Men's Tennis Advances To Championship After Thrilling Come-From-Behind Upset Of Findlay

(OWENSBORO, Ky.) – The most exciting match of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tennis Tournaments took place as No. 3 Walsh played No. 2 Findlay. As it ended up, it was the Cavaliers (10-12) who took a spot in the tournament championship with a 5-4 upset over the Oilers (9-11).

The match wasn't won easily by any means and Walsh had to do it in come-from-behind fashion after trailing 4-2.

In doubles action, Walsh took a quick 2-1 lead. Vasily Vidmanov and Filipp Kulynych defeated Carlos Blanco and Nicholas Kopylec 8-4 to finish the first doubles match of the day. Rodrigo Garcia and Heitor Adegas followed with a quick 8-3 triumph over Sergio Palacio and Trevor Majdalani.

The Cavs were close to sweeping the section, but Clemens Wagner and Jonah Carter were edged out by an 8-6 score by Jorge Barnuevo and Ivaylo Slavov in the No. 2 spot.

Walsh then fell behind after Findlay took the first few singles matches with wins at second, third, and sixth singles.

The Cavs brought it back to 4-3 as Vidmanov took down Kopylec 6-3, 6-4 and eventually tied it with a thrilling contest at fourth singles. Garcia took the first set against Slavov 6-1, but Slavov was able to bounce back and took set two 6-3. However, Garcia left no doubt in the third with a 6-0 shutout to bring Walsh even.

It all came down to fifth singles between Adegas and Majdalani. Adegas dropped the first set 6-4, but rebounded to give the Cavs the thrilling victory with wins in the second and third sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-2, respectively.

The win avenged two prior losses for Walsh via Findlay earlier this season. In the two prior contests, it was the Oilers who won a pair of 5-4 decisions.

Walsh now heads to tomorrow's championship against top-seeded Hillsdale.
