Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's lacrosse team used a major second half rally for the second straight game as they took on the Frostburg State Bobcats at Vasco Field on Saturday (Feb. 29).
Trailing 6-1 at halftime, the Cavaliers scored six of the seven goals in the third quarter as they tied the game at seven all. The Bobcats ended the game on a run, defeating the Cavaliers 12-8 in the second contest of the season.
Roman Smoot opened the contest with an unassisted goal 64 seconds in, putting the Cavaliers up 1-0. The Bobcats scored three goals over the final 14 minutes of the quarter, leading 3-1 after one quarter. Frostburg State tallied three goals in the second quarter, taking a 6-1 lead into the halftime break.
Five minutes into the third period, Smoot scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Anthony Munoz as the run began. Four minutes later, Brent Mitchell and the Cavaliers took advantage of a "power play" as Mitchell scored a man up goal on an assist from Smoot. Frostburg State halted the run with a goal three minutes later, regaining a four goal lead. Walsh scored four goals in a span of 2:05 to end the quarter. Sully Dowling and Jake Cieszynski both scored man-up goals within 17 seconds before Evan Bradley dished an assist to Dowling for his second goal in less than a minute. With 38 seconds left, Mitchell tied the game at seven with his second score of the day.
The Bobcats scored twice in the first four minutes, pushing the advantage to 9-7. Mitchell added his third goal of the contest, assisted by Kevin McMahon with 10:38 left on the clock. Frostburg State closed the game with three goals for a 12-8 final score.
Mitchell led the Cavaliers with three goals while Smoot and Dowling each finished with two goals apiece.
Cieszynski picked up five groundballs for the Cavaliers as he won 12 faceoffs in the game. Andrew Singer grabbed three while six different players had a pair of groundballs (Shane Profio, Patrick Cuddihy, Munoz, Marcus Brown, Gabe Brown and Dowling).
Cuddihy made 19 saves in goal as he faced 45 shots total with 31 on goal.
The Cavaliers will head South for Spring Break as they take on Embry-Riddle on Thursday (March 5) at 7 PM.
