Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Walsh Cavaliers men's lacrosse team opened their Spring Break trip in Florida with a non-conference matchup against the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Thursday (March 5) night.
The Cavaliers fell 16-6 to the Eagles in first of two games in the Sunshine State this week.
Embry-Riddle opened the game with two goals in the first three minutes before Brent Mitchell scored a goal on an assist from Evan Bradley one minute later, cutting the lead to 2-1. The Eagles responded with a goal as the lead grew back to two with ten minutes left in the first quarter. Mitchell struck again three minutes later for the Cavaliers. After two more Embry-Riddle goals, Roman Smoot closed the first quarter with a goal in the final minute, assisted by Sully Dowling. Walsh trailed 5-3 after the first quarter.
The Eagles struck quickly in the second quarter with a goal just seconds into the period. Preston Coffman assisted on Mitchell's third goal of the night with nine minutes before halftime. Embry-Riddle led 6-4 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Walsh was outscored 4-1 with Dowling accounting for the only goal of the third period as the Cavaliers were down 10-5 after three quarters.
Embry-Riddle rounded out the scoring with six straight goals in the fourth quarter before Tyler Wascovich scored on an assist from Smoot in the final minute. The Eagles were victorious 16-6 at home.
Mitchell scored three goals for the Cavaliers as Smoot and Dowling each had two points with a goal and an assist. Jake Cieszynski led the team with five groundballs in the game while Kyle Lacey and Patrick Cuddihy each had four groundballs. Smoot and Andrew Singer tallied three groundballs each.
Cuddihy made 13 saves in the goal, facing 29 shots on goal.
Walsh returns to the field on Saturday (March 7) at Saint Leo, starting at 11:00 AM.
