NORTH CANTON, OH – Walsh University is proud to announce that Women's Basketball alumna, Ty Newkirk, has joined the Walsh Women's Basketball coaching staff as an Assistant Coach. Newkirk is no stranger to the program, having suited up in Maroon and Gold as a Student-Athlete for four seasons from 2016-2020. 

During her time as a Cavalier, Newkirk was part of a historic era for the program, contributing to back-to-back G-MAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Her leadership helped guide the team to a record-setting 28-2 season — the best in program history.

"Returning to Walsh, as an Assistant Coach, is such a special moment for me. This university helped shape who I am, and now I get to give back in a new way — supporting the program, the players, and a community that has always felt like home. I'm so happy to be back."

Newkirk earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Management from Walsh in 2020, followed by a Master of Education in Sport Management from Cleveland State University in 2023.

Head Coach Johnny Montello shared his enthusiasm for Newkirk's return:
"I'm excited to welcome Ty Newkirk to our staff. Ty brings extensive experience with the system we'll be implementing, along with an exceptional basketball IQ. As a Walsh University alumna, she understands the unique experience of being a Student-Athlete here and will be a great asset in building strong connections with our players. It's a great feeling to bring someone on board who is not only genuine but someone I trust wholeheartedly to be a leader in this program."
