Box Score (MARQUETTE, Mich.) Aaron Male scored on a six-yard run with 56 seconds to play to cap a 21-point fourth quarter and lift Walsh (3-6, 3-6) to a 27-24 come-from-behind win over Northern Michigan University (2-7, 1-7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the Superior Dome today. The win snapped a seven-game road losing streak for the Cavs, who return home next Saturday to meet Glenville State University in a non-conference game at 11 am at Fawcett Stadium.
The teams traded field goals in the first quarter as the quarter ended tied at 3-all. Walsh's Michael Dudics then booted a 43-yard field goal midway through the second period to give Walsh a 6-3 lead.
Northern Michigan would take a 10-6 lead into the locker room at halftime when Marcus Tucker made a fingertip catch on a pass from Shaye Brown from 33 yards out. Walsh's attempt to trim the lead to 10-9 failed when the Wildcats blocked Dudic's 46-yard field attempt with 56 seconds left in the first half.
NMU took a 17-6 third quarter lead when Brown connected with Trey Hipke for a nine-yard strike with 5:32 to play.
Walsh closed to with five points at 17-12 with 9:13 to play in the fourth when Kalvin Gordon scored his second collegiate TD from the one-yard line. The Cavs two-point conversion play failed.
The Cavs defense then came up big when C. J. Chatman intercepted a Wildcat pass at the NMU 26. A personal foul on Northern after the play gave Walsh possession at the 23-yard line.
Walsh took the lead 30 seconds later when Jason Fracassa connected with Jerald Robinson for a six-yard score with 5:43 to play. Fracassa and Robinson then hooked up again on the two-point conversion to give the Cavs a 20-17 lead.
The Cavs lead would last only 14 seconds as Keshawn Walker returned Dudics kick 100 yards for a score to give the Wildcats a 24-20. Their two-point try failed.
Walsh then put together their most impressive drive of the season going 68 yards in nine plays. Fracassa completed four of five passes, one for 18 yards to Schrock on the NMU nine yard line to give the Cavs first and goal. Luke Lloyd also had a key run of 13 yards two plays earlier. Male's game-winning TD run came on second and goal.
NMU would advance the ball to the Walsh 38-yard line but would turn the ball back to the Cavs on downs.
Fracassa completed 17 of 31 passes for 150 yards. Schrock caught six passes for 69 yards. Robinson caught four passes for 52 yards and Male also caught four passes. Male paced the ground attack with 64 yards, mostly in the second half and Keith rushed for 47 yards.
Cameron Trudell paced the Cavs strong defensive effort with 10 solo tackles. Pat White had seven tackles and Chatman had six.
