Ferris State Rallies to Edge Cavs to Complete Perfect Regular Season

Box Score

(CANTON, Ohio) Ferris State quarterback Jason Vander Lann scored on a one-yard run with 36 seconds to play to lift the fourth ranked Bulldogs to a 46-42 come-from-behind win over upset minded Walsh in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Fawcett Stadium. The win kept the Bulldogs' perfect season intact at 11-0 overall and 10-0 in the GLIAC. Walsh had their two-game winning streak stopped, and finish the season 4-7 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC.

Walsh pulled out all the stops in their attempt to end Ferris' perfect season, forcing turnovers, and by digging into a deep bag of tricks.

Ferris State took a 7-0 first quarter lead at 9:47 when Antonio Agurs caught a 24-yard pass from Vander Laan to complete an eight-play 78-yard drive.

Walsh would answer, and tie the game at 7-all, when Justin Keith scored on a two-yard run at 5:42 of the period. The score was set-up by an 18-yard run by Aaron Male, and a 34-yard pass from Jason Fracassa to Anthony Schrock at the Ferris State two-yard line.

The Bulldogs regained the lead on their next possession on Mitch Bredberg's 27-yard field goal and led 10-7 after one quarter.

Walsh took their first lead of the game at 9:40 of the second period when Fracassa connected with Jerald Robinson for a 15-yard score. The drive was set-up when Nicholas King recovered a Vander Lann fumble at midfield, and Male caught a option pass from wide receiver Blake Williams for a 36-yard gain to the FSU 14-yard line.

Walsh's defense would rise up again and force another Vander Lann fumble on the next possession. Kyle Kelly would force the fumble and Cameron Trudell would recover at the FSU 38-yard line. Walsh would reach into the bag of tricks again when Schrock caught an option pass from Blake Williams for a 15-yard TD to give the Cavs a 21-10 lead with 6:25 to play in the first half.

Ferris State would answer, and pull to within 21-17, when Vander Laan scored on a one-yard run at 3:39.

Walsh would stay calm and return the favor marching 70 yards in four plays and scoring on Keith's one-yard run. Keith keyed the drive with a 49-yard reception on a screen play which advanced the ball to the FSU 21. Fracassa then completed a 19-yard pass to Male to the FSU one-yard line to set-up the Keith score, as Walsh led 28-17 at the half.

Ferris State took the second half kick and rambled 57 yards in seven plays, in only 1:56, to cut the Walsh lead to 28-24 when Jamel Lockett scored on a four-yard run.

The Cavs would stay the course though, and answer the Bulldogs score when Keith scored his third TD of the day on a one-yard run at 9:04 to give Walsh a 35-24 lead. This was the final score of the third quarter.

The visitors started the fourth quarter scoring at 14:06 when Vander Laan scored on a four-yard run. The Bulldogs then took a play from Walsh's playbook and scored the two-point conversion on an option pass to trim the Walsh lead to 35-32.

After a Walsh three and out, Ferris State would cough up the football for a third time to set-up another Cavalier score. After Shakur Sanders caught a Vander Laan pass and advanced to the Walsh 41-yard line, he was stripped from behind by Jamaris Brown. Braily Blair recovered the ball for Walsh at the Cavs 37.

Walsh would take full advantage scoring four plays later as Fracassa connected with Robinson again, this time a 27-yard score on a spectacular catch and run to give Walsh a 42-32 lead with 9:38 to play.

Ferris would now answer the Cavs TD and go 80 yards in seven plays and pull to within 42-39 when Vander Laan hooked-up with Jamaal Jackson for a 23-yard score with 7:25 to play. The drive was extended on a key third down completion to Sanders at the Walsh 46 on third and six.

Walsh started their next drive at their own 25-yard line with 7:19 to play in an attempt to salt the game away. The Cavs kept possession on two key passes to Danny Reed which moved the ball to the Walsh 42. Male then broke loose for 19 yards to the FSU 39 yard line. It was here that the Bulldogs' defense would stiffen. The Cavs dropped key passes on third and fourth down, the last one which would have given the Cavs a first down at the FSU 20 with 4:05 to play.

Ferris would then march 63 yards in ten plays to escape with the win. The key play of the series was a 26-yard pass for a first down on fourth and three to Jajuan Pollock which gave FSU the ball at the Walsh 30. Vander Laan also had a key 11-yard pass to Jamel Lockett which moved the ball to the Cavs' eight. Vander Laan's winning score came on third and goal at the one.

Walsh had 34 seconds left, but advanced the ball just past midfield as time ran out.

Fracassa matched Vander Laan step for step, completing 20 of 39 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson caught both scores and finished the season with ten TD catches, the second most in Walsh history. Robinson caught four passes for 42 yards. Male was the games leading receiver with seven receptions for 90 yards, and led Walsh with 86 yards on the ground. Schrock caught five passes for 83 yards.

Vander Laan finished the day 18 of 27 for 260 yards, connecting with Jamel Lockett six times for 68 yards.

FSU rolled-up 521 yards to Walsh's 456.

Pat White, Trudell and Brown each had eight tackles for the Cavs.
