Michigan Tech Takes Down Cavs

(CANTON, Ohio ) – Walsh closed out its first conference weekend with a defeat to visiting Michigan Tech by a score of 6-3 at the Hall of Fame Courts Sunday morning. The Cavaliers are now 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC. The Huskies, ranked No. 10 in the Midwest Region, remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

The Cavaliers went down 2-1 after doubles play as Ross Whittaker (Fr., Massillon, OH/Lake) and Iagos Lucca (Fr., Caxias du Sul/Brazil/Colegio La Salle Caxias) picked up the only point with an 8-3 win in seconds. Louis Thomas (Sr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Alex Portelance (So., Repentigny, Quebec/Felix-Leclerc) almost made it 2-1 in favor of the Maroon and Gold, but were defeated 9-7 in third doubles.

Thomas and Portelance gave Walsh its other two points with wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Both players made short work of their opponents as Thomas won 6-3, 6-1 and Portelanace won 6-1, 6-0.

Walsh now will play seven consecutive matches away from home starting with Saint Leo University over spring break in Florida. That match will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
