Cavs Top Hilltoppers In Late Rally

Box Score

(SALEM, Va.) - Walsh had a comeback for the ages as it was down five runs in the fifth inning and pulled out an 8-6 over West Liberty (W.Va.) in its only game today in the Salem Tournament. The Cavaliers scored all eight runs in the final three runs and were down to their last out against the Hilltoppers (7-8).

West Liberty jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and pushed the score to 5-0 with runs in the third and fourth frames. The Cavs' bats finally heated up with four runs in the fifth.

Abby Reusser (Fr., Orrville, OH/HS) started the spark with a double to left field and gave Walsh its first run shortly after a single to right by Presley Destro (Jr., Mogadore, OH/HS/Catawba). Chelsy Testa (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) followed that up with a double of her own to move Destro to third.

The momentum tide switched in favor of the Cavaliers as Jo Nicodemus (Fr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/Archbishop Hoban) came in to pinch hit. In her first appearance of the year, Nicodemus sent a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence for a 3-run home run. After a scoreless fifth, Walsh tied the game at 5-5 after an error in the outfield allowed Marissa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS) to score from first base.

The Hilltoppers regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with a home run to set up the exciting seventh inning finish. After the first two batters were retired in the top of the frame, Eryn Simon (Sr., Oregon, OH/Clay) and Bondoni gave the Cavs life with a walk and single to left, respectively. Casi Rohr (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo), who came in during the fifth inning, then doubled to center field to score Simon and tie the game at 6-6. Walsh took the lead on the next at-bat as an error by West Liberty's short stop allowed Bondoni and Rohr to score.

Rohr closed the game as she retired the Hilltoppers in order in with a popup and a pair of strikeouts. She picked up the win in relief to improve to 5-3 on the year. Rohr struck out four in all and allowed one run on one hit three innings of work.

The Cavs will close out the Salem Tournament with a split doubleheader tomorrow. Walsh takes on Shippensburg University first at 11 a.m. and will follow that up with a game against Franklin Pierce University at 1 p.m.
