Box Score (ASHLAND, Ohio) – Walsh fell behind early and couldn't recover on the road as it fell to Ashland by a count of 41-17 under the lights Saturday evening. The Cavaliers, now 1-1 both overall and in the GLIAC, trailed 10-0 after one quarter of play and were worn down by a balanced Eagles (2-0, 2-0) attack.
After a slow start in the first quarter, Walsh eventually got on the board with a 17-yard scoring strike from Brody Tonn to Jerald Robinson that made the score 10-7. It was a quality drive and finish for the Cavs as they went 80 yards on 12 plays in 6:01 to get back into the game.
However, Ashland's offense was quick to respond as the Jordan McCune helped put the Eagles back on top by double digits with a six-yard run to the end zone that capped a short 31-yard. The 17-7 score carried into halftime.
The Cavs forced Ashland to punt on the first drive in the second half thanks to a sack by CJ Chatman, but a turnover on Walsh's first play quickly gave the Eagles back any momentum the Maroon and Gold may have generated. Tonn was intercepted by Ashland's Adam Wallace who made a 23-yard returned before being stripped by Aaron Male. The ball bounced into the end zone where Ashland's Eric Schwieterman recovered and made the score 24-7 after the PAT.
Walsh scored a field goal on its next drive thanks to a 24-yard boot by Michael Dudics, but Ashland responded with a touchdown run to make it 31-10.
The Cavaliers' last score came on the ground as Male punched it in from a yard out to cut Walsh's deficit to 31-17 with 9:09 to play. The Eagles put all hopes of a comeback on ice with a 29-yard touchdown pass to cap their longest scoring drive of the game which clocked in at 5:19.
Walsh finished with 314 total yards with 244 markers through the air. Tonn was responsible for all of those as he went completed 22-of-39 with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Pat White paced the Cavs defensively as he was all over the field with 12 tackles, 10 of which were solo. Jamaris Brown also reached double digits with 10 tackles.
The Cavaliers will now attempt to regroup and get back into the win column against Lake Erie. The two schools played in a high-scoring affair last season as the Storm edged out the victory. Walsh will be under the lights once again as kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Painesville.
