Box Score (PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – While it wasn't as a high scoring game as last season's matchup, another shootout happened at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium. Unfortunately the Cavaliers (1-2, 1-2) were on the wrong end of the scoreboard as the Storm (1-2, 1-2) won by a count of 47-36.
The Cavs didn't have an answer for Anthony Bilal as he ran for 171 yards and six touchdowns. Three of those scores came on runs of 34 yards or more. He now has 12 on the season and became Lake Erie's all-time scoring leader.
It didn't take long for the scoreboard to light up as it took Walsh just 2:57 to go 70 yards on six plays for a touchdown on the game's opening drive. Jerald Robinson brought in the touchdown reception on a 23-yard pass from Brody Tonn to put Walsh up 7-0.
Lake Erie answered in similar fashion with a 58-yard pass from Mitchel Hokavar to Tommy Jackson on a drive that went 73-yards on six plays in 2:21 to tie the game.
Justin Keith put the Cavs back on top with a four-yard run to cap a seven-play, 67-yard drive to make the score 14-7. The Storm was quick to respond again as Bilal scampered 34-yards for his first score of the game 2:19 later. That was the last score of the first quarter, but it was the first of three consecutive touchdowns, all by Bilal, as Lake Erie started to take control of the game.
Walsh eventually got back in the end zone with 23-yard touchdown pass to Luke Lloyd from Brody Tonn. That put the Cavs down 27-21 with 8:11 to go in the third quarter.
On the Storm's ensuing drive, Bilal broke off his longest run of the night with a 46-yard touchdown run. That made the score 33-21 after the PAT was blocked.
As the Cavs were driving on their next possession, a fumble just shy of a first down on 4th-and-7 gave Lake Erie the ball back. Nine plays later Bilal was back in the end zone and gave Lake Erie a 40-21 lead with 13:20 to go in the game.
Tonn passed for another touchdown, this time 16-yards to Aaron Male, but a 43-yard touchdown by Bilal made it 47-28 with 8:09 to go in the game. Jeremy Willison caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Tonn with Anthony Schrock providing a two-point conversion to make the score 47-36, but time ran out on Walsh as it came with 1:34 left in the game.
Both teams were strong on the offensive end. Walsh eclipsed the 500-yard mark with 504 yards, but couldn't stop Lake Erie which generated 602 yards of total offense, 362 of which was on the ground.
Lost in all of the action was a solid day by Tonn who threw for 272 yards. He was 20-of-25 with four touchdowns and two interceptions on the evening. Schrock was his favorite target with five receptions for 78 yards. On the ground, Keith finished a decent night with 99 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
The Cavs return home next weekend and will host a nationally ranked team in Ohio Dominican. The Panthers were ranked No. 9 and remained undefeated with a win over Ashland. Kick-off between the Cavs and Panthers is set for noon.
