Box Score 2 (CLERMONT, Fla.) – A walk-off home run gave Walsh a thrilling 4-1 victory over Saint Anselm in the first of its two games Monday during spring break. Nikki Newman (So., North Royalton, OH/HS) sent a three-run blast over the center field wall to keep the Cavaliers unbeaten at 3-0. The Hawks are now 1-1.
It was the second late-game rally in a row for Walsh after a 10-5 eight-inning win to cap off Sunday. The Cavs initially took the lead after Samantha Troxell (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS/YSU) scored on a sac fly by Newman in the bottom of the third. Troxell led off the frame with a triple to left center.
Saint Anselm answered in its next at bat with a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Anna Anderson was the first Cav player on base after a single to the shortstop. Troxell followed up two batters later with a single through the left side to set up Newman's walk-off.
Olivia Pifer (Fr., Loveland, OH/HS) picked up the win as she threw the complete game. She allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts against one walk.
In the second game, Lewis prevailed in a pitcher's duel 1-0 with the only run coming in the first inning. The Flyers' (4-2) led off with a single to center field and moved the runner around on a sac bunt and a pair of singles.
Casi Rohr picked up the loss despite allowing just two hits the rest of the way to drop to 1-1.
Walsh, now 3-1 after the loss in the second game, returns to action tomorrow with games against Gannon at 1 p.m. and Mary afterwards at 3.
