Box Score 1 (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - In its third doubleheader in as many days, Walsh swept visiting Lake Erie College by scores of 4-3 and 17-8 on a chilly spring afternoon. The Cavaliers improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference while the Storm fell to 6-8 overall and are 0-2 in GLIAC play.
Game One started out as a pitchers' duel before the offense for both teams woke up in the final three innings. Walsh eventually struck first with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth frames. Marissa Bondoni (Jr., Alliance, OH/HS) put the Cavs on the board with a double down the left field line to score Nikki Newman (So., North Royalton, OH/HS) and Sam Troxell (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/YSU).
In the bottom of the sixth, Reagan Rito (So., Beloit, OHWest Branch) and Annie Woolf (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) hit back-to-back home runs to give the Cavs a 4-0 lead. The Storm took advantage of a Walsh error and answered with all three of its runs in the top of the seventh, but stranded the tying run on base.
Reigning GLIAC Pitcher of the Week Casi Rohr (Sr., Massillon, OH/Perry) picked up her sixth win of the year as she threw the complete game. She allowed three runs, none of which were earned, on six hits with nine strikeouts. In her last four games, she has struck out 38 batters.
Proverbial fireworks appeared throughout the night cap as multiple runs were scored in every inning. Lake Erie opened up with a 4-0 lead before Walsh gained the lead with seven runs in the top of the third. The Storm tied the game in the bottom of the frame, but could not stop the Cavaliers' fire power. The hosts responded with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and put the final nail in the coffin with five runs in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.
Walsh hit two home runs and six doubles in the nightcap. Jenna Head hit one of the round trips and was 3-for-4 in the game with four RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Troxell got a workout in during the game as she was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two walks, and four runs scored.
Olivia Pifer (Fr., Loveland, OH/HS) picked up the win in relief as she pitched the final three innings of the game to improve to 2-1 on the season. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out one.
Walsh returns to the diamond at home against Lake Superior State this Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
