Box Score 2 (ROSEMONT, Ill.) – Walsh split its second day of softball competition with a tough 6-5 extra innings loss to Missouri S&T before a 5-3 win over William Jewell at the Rosemont Invitational. The Cavaliers are now 3-1, the Miners improved to 2-9, and the Cardinals dropped to 6-5.
The first game saw the Cavaliers take a 5-0 lead on Missouri S&T, but the Miners scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and scored the winning run in walk-off fashion in the eighth.
Up 2-0 after six, Walsh added three more in the seventh. Marissa Bondoni singled to left center that brought in Alaina Manor. After a fielding error by the left fielder, Kesley Putman (Fr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) scored to make it 4-0 in favor of the Cavaliers. Reagan Rito added the final run with a single to right to bring in Bondoni.
However, the Miners rallied with five runs in the bottom of the frame. A two-out bases loaded double to right center by S&T cleared the bases to make the score 5-4 before a single to right center on the play tied the game. The Miners scored the game-winning run on a single to left in the bottom of the eighth.
In the night cap, the Cavaliers added three runs in the seventh inning, but this time they held on for the 5-3 win. Walsh was aided by a pair of errors to separate itself from William Jewell in w 2-2 tie. The first came on a bunt by Nikki Newman on a miscue by the pitcher that allowed Anna Anderson to score. Bondoni then scored Abby Reusser on a sacrifice fly before Danni Murtaugh singled up the middle to score Newman for the Cavs' final run.
Murtaugh also singled down the left field line to give Walsh its first run in the top of the first. After the Cards took a 2-1 lead, Abbey Yaugher brought in Bondoni on a fielder's choice to tie the game.
Ryan Kuula was the tough-luck loser in Game 1 as she came on in relief in the seventh and gave up the final run, albeit unearned as the runner was automatically placed on second because of extra-inning rules.
Olivia Pifer earned the win in the second game after she came on in relief to pitch the final two innings. She gave up one run, unearned, on two hits with two strikeouts against one walk.
Walsh will close out its opening weekend with Illinois-Springfield tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
