(CLERMONT, Fla.) – The Walsh softball team split a pair of close games in its penultimate day down in Florida with a 1-0 win against Southwest Minnesota and a 5-4 loss to Sioux Falls. The Cavaliers are now 5-10 on the season. The Mustangs dropped to 3-11, and the Cougars improved to 13-5.

Against the Mustangs, the Cavs received a masterful performance from Olivia Pifer who tossed the three-hit complete game gem. She struck out nine and gave up just two bases on balls in her fourth win of the season.

While Walsh was limited on the offensive end as well, the Maroon and Gold was able to get a run in during the fifth inning. Jordan Monnot led off the bottom of the frame with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mariah Rock then came in to pinch run and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Anna Anderson. Alaina Manor then brought Rock in the rest of the way on a sacrifice fly to center.

Walsh's defense played well throughout the game as only one Mustang base runner was able to reach third base in the entire game.

The Cavs were on the opposite end of the narrow decision against the Cougars. USF scored four runs in the first two innings and held on for a 5-4 win.

Walsh came very close to tying the game in the seventh as Abbey Yaugher singled to right with the bases loaded to score Manor, but Nikki Newman was tagged out at home on her attempt to score. Jordan Monnot was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to load the bases once again, but the Cougars struck out Walsh's next batter to end the game.

The Cavaliers play Franklin Pierce and Bentley tomorrow for their final two games of spring break. Start times are set for 9 and 11 a.m.
