Box Score 2 (CLERMONT, Fla.) – The final day of spring break games was a great one for Walsh as it swept a pair of games against Franklin Pierce and Bentley on Saturday morning. The Cavaliers (7-10) defeated the Ravens (0-1) 1-0 and followed up with a 9-3 win over the Falcons (0-2).
In the first game against Franklin Pierce, the Cavs plated the lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Nikki Newman provided the hit with a single up the middle to score Mariah Rock from second. Rock was pinch running for Abbey Yaugher who hit a two-out double to right.
The Ravens threatened in the top of the seventh with a pair of hits, but both runners were left stranded.
Olivia Pifer threw a gem as she shut out the Ravens on six hits. She struck out eight in the opener to improve her record to 5-5.
The offense was livelier for the second game as Walsh scored seven runs in the first two innings against the Falcons. Four of them came in a huge first inning where Walsh hit three home runs for all of its offense.
Anna Anderson provided the first with a solo shot to center field. After Yaugher singled up the middle, Danni Murtaugh made it 3-0 with another round trip to center. Jenna Head also went yard to center two batters later to make it 4-0.
Three runs followed in the second. Two of them were scored when the bases were loaded as both Yaugher and Murtaugh were hit by pitches. Marissa Bondoni brought in the other run on a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Anderson to move home from third.
Reagan Rito singled in Yaugher in the fourth and Annie Dehnke doubled to center to score Rock to give Walsh a 9-0 lead, but Bentley scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth to prevent the mercy rule from taking effect.
Shelbi Gregg picked up her first win of the season as she went five innings and struck out three batters.
The Cavaliers return home and will open up an eight-game home stand against Indianapolis this Tuesday. First pitch with the Greyhounds is set for 1 p.m.
