Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Emma Armour scored five goals and assisted in another in helping Walsh to a 17-13 victory over Notre Dame in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers remained unbeaten at 2-0 on the season while the Falcons dropped to 2-2 on the year.
While Notre Dame played close with the Cavs throughout the game, Walsh never trailed during the contest. Armour's second goal sparked a 3-0 run as Walsh appeared to breakaway, but the Falcons answered with the next two scores.
A pivotal moment in the game came early in the second half as the Cavaliers went on a 4-0 run. The first two goals as the Cavs were down a player on a yellow card. Armour scored the first to start the run and Lane Brunkala scored the second to keep it going. Sarah McCormick followed on an assist from Amanda Hodel, who later scored the fourth to give Walsh a 13-8 lead, its biggest advantage of the day.
Notre Dame attempted to get back into the game with four of the next five goals, but Aly Jajack scored two goals down the stretch and McCormick added another to ice the game.
Mikaela Faus, who was recently named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded seven saves on 28 shots faced in the win.
Jajack finished with four goals, McCormick finished with three, and Brunkala tallied two to help the offense. McCormick was also a force on draw controls as she came up with 11. Sam Paulson was impressive defensively as she caused four turnovers, picked up four ground balls, and tallied four draw controls.
Walsh now hits the road for three games and will play in its conference opener this Sunday at Lake Erie. First draw with the Storm is scheduled for 1 p.m.
