Box Score 1 (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – It was a tough conference opening day for Walsh as it was swept by No. 18 Wayne State by scores of 6-1 and 9-1 on Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers dropped to 9-14 overall on the season. The Warriors, who were also opening GLIAC play today, improved to 23-4.
In the opening game, the Cavs initially took the lead with their only run of the game in the first inning. Danni Murtaugh brought in Alaina Manor for the run on a ground out the third base. Manor initially reached base on a fielding error to lead off the bottom of the inning.
Wayne State scored the equalizer in the next frame and added five runs across the fifth and sixth innings.
In the nightcap, the offense struggled again as the Cavaliers only generated three hits. Two of them came in the sixth inning as Anna Anderson and Manor combined for back-to-back triples for Walsh's only score.
The Warriors exploded for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win the game on a walk-off sacrifice fly.
The Cavaliers close out their eight-game home stand tomorrow with another GLIAC twin bill. This time the Maroon and Gold will host Saginaw Valley State with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
