Late Game Rallies Help Softball Sweep Malone On Senior Day

Box Score 1

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – On Senior Day, Walsh swept Malone in a pair of one-run games by scores of 4-3 and 7-6 on a sunny Thursday afternoon. The Cavaliers improved to 17-20 overall and evened their GLIAC record to 8-8. The Pioneers dropped to 10-19 overall and 1-14 in the GLIAC.

The opening game ended in walk-off fashion after Malone rallied for three runs in the seventh. One of the seniors being honored between games scored the game-winning run as Riley Kiesling took advantage on a throwing error on what would have been a sacrifice bunt by Abby Reusser.

Kendra Moore initially put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly that allowed Jenna Head to score in the bottom of the fourth. Head later hit a two-run homer to left field that also scored Nikki Newman in the bottom of the sixth.

Shelbi Gregg came on in relief in the final inning and recorded the final two Pioneer outs. She improved to 6-4 with the win. Olivia Pifer started the game and was impressive despite the no decision. She allowed three runs, one earned, on eight hits with nine strikeouts against three walks in 6.1 innings of work.

The Maroon and Gold faced more of an uphill challenge in the second game and scored two runs in the final inning to take the win.

Once again it was Head with the heroics as she doubled to left center to score Kathleen Walsh and Marissa Bondoni for the go-ahead runs. Head also hit in Bondoni with a double to center to make the score 6-5 in the fifth.

Head finished the day a combined 5-for-7 with five RBI and three runs scored. Between both games, she hit for the cycle with a single, two doubles, a triple, and a home run.

Bondoni hit in the first run with a sacrifice fly to score Alaina Manor in the top of the first. After Malone tied the game in the bottom of the frame, Walsh regained the lead when Bondoni scored fellow senior Anna Anderson on a ground out in the third.

The Pioneers took the lead later that inning with a pair of unearned runs. Anderson singled in Kendra Moore and Head to regain the lead in the fourth before Malone answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Kuula came on in relief and pitched the final 3.1 innings to record her second win of the season. She shut out the Pioneers on two hits the rest of the way and struck out three which included the final batter.

The Cavs now get ready for the first of two trips to Michigan. They will take on Lake Superior State first in Midland, Mich., on Saturday before squaring off with Northwood on Sunday. First pitch with the Lakers on Saturday is set for 9 a.m.
