Box Score 2 (BIG RAPIDS, Mich.) – Walsh's chances at making the GLIAC Tournament a third consecutive time took a hit it dropped both games to Ferris State by scores of 6-5 and 6-5 in 11 innings Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers are now 18-27 overall and 9-15 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs improved to 30-16 overall and 15-7 in the conference.
In the opener, Walsh was forced to place catch-up after the Bulldogs scored five runs in the first two innings. The Cavs got back into the game with a big third inning with three runs. Riley Kiesling brought in the first run with a bunt single that allowed Abby Reusser to score.
Two batters later, Danni Murtaugh singled through the left side to score Alaina Manor. Abbey Yaugher singled to the same place to score Kiesling. Walsh cut the deficit to one in the next frame as Nikki Newman homered to left field, but Ferris State added one in the bottom of the frame to make the score 6-4.
Manor hit in Reusser for the final run in the sixth, but Walsh left the tying run on third stranded.
In the nightcap, Walsh carried a 5-4 lead into the final frame, but the Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the seventh and added the winning run in the 11th.
Ferris State jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Cavs answered with a four-run fourth to take their only lead of the day. Walsh was methodical on its hitting with six hits in the frame. Yaugher brought in Bondoni, who led off the inning with a double, for the first run of the rally. Three batters later, Reusser hit in pinch runner Rachel Hoffee on a single to left center.
Anna Anderson followed with an RBI single to score Newman. Annie Woolf then hit a pinch-hit single to center to score Kendra Moore to give Walsh a 5-4 lead.
Walsh will close the regular season at Grand Valley State tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
