Men's Tennis Prevails In GLIAC Opener at Tech

(HOUGHTON, Mich.) – The Walsh men's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 over Michigan Tech in its GLIAC opener at the Gates Tennis Center today. The Cavaliers are now 9-6 on the season, while the Huskies dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Cavs took a commanding lead with a sweep of doubles play. Ross Whittaker and Felix Zimmermann took an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Mario Neto and Juan Felipe Chica. Vasily Vidmanov and Rodrigo Garcia had the toughest doubles match, buy still won 8-5. Heitor Adegas and Jose Fernandez equaled Whittaker's and Zimmermann's score with an 8-3 win.

In singles play, Whittaker was perfect with a pair of 6-1 set wins in No. 2 singles over Felipe Chica. Zimmermann added a 6-1, 7-5 victor at No. 3. Garcia dropped the first set 6-0, but rebounded nicely to win the second and third by 6-1 in both.

Adegas defeated his No. 5 singles opponent 6-4, 6-1, while Fernandez defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2.

Walsh returns to the court tomorrow to take on Lake Superior State in the Upper Peninsula.
