Cavaliers Split on Opening Day of Rosemont Invitational

(ROSEMONT, Ill.)-  The Cavaliers split in their season opener at the Rosemont Invitational. An offensive explosion in game number one carried the Cavaliers (1-1) to a 7-4 victory over the Miners of Missouri S&T (7-4). Walsh had 16 hits, coming off the bats of nine different Cavaliers. The offense was quieted as the Cavaliers lost 5-1 to Illinois-Springfield (3-2) in the nightcap.

In Game One, Abbey Yaugher scored the first run of the year in second inning following an RBI single by Alaina Manor. Yasime Rivera quickly came around to score off the bat of Leah Roten. Brooke Six hit the first Cavalier home run in the third to make it a 3-1 game.

Six drove in her second run of the game in the fourth scoring Jessie Rock, who reached on a fielder's choice. Annie Woolf continued the fourth inning scoring by driving in Six on a single to left center. Roten drove in her second run of the game in the fifth on a double to right center driving in Rivera. Rock capped the Cavalier runs with ground rule double to right center to drive in Roten.

The Miners scored early on a single by Gretchen Egly scoring Olivia Young. The Miners remained scoreless until the fifth inning when three runs were scored off a pass ball and a couple hits.

Sophomore Leah Roten went 4-5 with a double and two RBI. Rock and Six had two hits while Rivera had three. Olivia Pifer (1-0) went the distance for the Cavaliers and recorded the victory. Pifer had three strikeouts while giving up 8 hits.

The Cavaliers scored quickly in Game Two, but that was all they could produce. Kesley Putman scored the lone run of the game for the Cavaliers after leading the game off with a walk. She eventually came around to score on a line drive single up the middle by Jessie Rock.

Ryan Kuula (0-1) started on the mound but lasted only 1.1 innings giving up three runs one of which was earned. The Prairie Stars scattered five runs across the first three innings, but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The Cavaliers are back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. against William Jewel. The Maroon and Gold will finish up opening weekend against Lindenwood at 11 a.m.
