Cavs Tripped Up In Season Opener at Wayne State

Box Score

(DETROIT) – Walsh fell to Wayne State in the season opener by a score of 31-0 in the Motor City on Thursday evening. The Cavaliers are back in action against another former conference foe in Saginaw Valley State for the home opener at Tom Benson Stadium.

The Cavaliers defense held up for most of the first half and limited the Warriors to a field goal in the first quarter, but the hosts were able to break a big play and score their first touchdown on a 62-yard pass shortly after the start of the second quarter.

Wayne State eventually went to the ground game and was able to pound in three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

Walsh's best chance to score came in the first half. The Cavs were able to drive down to the Wayne State 35 just after the start of the second quarter, but a long field goal attempt that would have tied the game came up just short.

Defensively Walsh was led by Stephen Baugh with nine tackles, three of which came for a loss that totaled six yards. Dylan Garver added seven tackles and picked off one pass with a 30-yard return to close out the first half.

Koby Adu-Poku accounted for 140 total yards between rushing, receiving, and kickoff returns. Mitchell Ault went 10-of-18 for 78 yards under center.
