Walsh Rally Falls Short on Day Two

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Walsh Cavaliers softball team continued their Spring Break stint at the Spring Games at the Osceola Complex on Monday (March 4).

The Cavaliers fell in game one to Mercy 9-5 and dropped the nightcap 4-3 to Wayne State College.

Game One

Mercy opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Walsh answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Katelyn Loughman walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice and moved to third on a passed ball. She scored on a groundout by Jessie Rock.

The Mavericks gained a 3-1 lead with two runs in the third. Once again, the Cavaliers responded with a run to stay close. Katelyn Kennedy reached on an error, before being lifted for a pinch runner, Alex Depue. Rock walked and Depue scored on a RBI single.

Mercy scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth, taking a 9-2 lead.

Walsh rallied for two runs in the sixth inning, closing the gap. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with a double, walk and a single with one out. Loughman and Rachel Rittelmann each singled home a run as the Cavs trailed 9-4.

With two outs in the seventh, Alina Molette capped a run of three straight singles with a RBI single scoring a run. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with a walk but could not muster any more runs, falling 9-5 in the opener.

Molette, Taylor Yoder and Hailey Warren each had two hits as the Cavaliers totaled 11 hits.

Sara Gockenbach allowed one unearned run in two innings. Ellie Smith tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

Game Two

Walsh continued the hot hitting into the second game as they scored two runs in the first inning. Loughman singled and moved around the bases on a sacrifice and a groundout. After a walk, Kirsten Reed and Yoder each singled home a run as the Cavaliers led 2-0.

The Wildcats took the 4-2 lead with two runs in the second and third innings.

Walsh attempted a rally in the top of the seventh inning as they trailed by two. The Cavaliers loaded the bases on three straight singles with no outs. Walsh hit into two fielder's choices at home plate but Yoder singled home a run, pulling the Cavaliers within one. They fell 4-3 in the second game.

Yoder went three-for-four with two RBI. Loughman and Brooke Six each had two hits in the nightcap.

The Cavaliers play West Virginia Wesleyan at 9:15 AM and Southern Indiana (11:30 AM) on Tuesday (March 5).
