KISSIMMEE, Florida – The Walsh Cavaliers softball team swung the bats on Tuesday (March 5), totaling 19 hits and ten runs but fell in both games at the Spring Games.

The Cavaliers was on the short end of a 12-8 slugfest to West Virginia Wesleyan and fell 7-2 to the defending Division II national champions, Southern Indiana.

Game One

The Bobcats opened the game with six runs in the first inning. Walsh immediately countered with two runs on one swing of the bat. After Brooke Six singled, Jessie Rock went deep for a two-run homerun to center field.

In the third inning, Rock connected for her second homer in as many at-bats, cutting the Bobcats' lead to 6-3.

The Cavaliers continued to pull closer to West Virginia Wesleyan in the fourth inning as they manufactured another run. Abbey Yaugher walked and Alina Molette doubled, putting runners in scoring position. Katelyn Loughman plated a run with a groundout to third base. Walsh trailed 6-4 after four innings.

West Virginia Wesleyan added three runs in the fifth and seventh innings, distancing themselves going to the final half inning.

Walsh wasn't done yet as they put another rally together. Six opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk. Rock drove her in with a RBI double, her third hit of the day and fourth RBI. Emma Bobey walked and Kirsten Reed was hit by a pitch loading the bases with no outs. Katelyn Kennedy plated one run with a RBI single. Hailey Warren added another run as she was hit by a pitch. The Cavaliers scored their fourth run of the inning on a double play ball from Yaugher. Walsh fell 12-8 in the first game.

Rock went three for four with four RBI and two runs scored. Reed added two hits as the Cavaliers had ten hits in the first game of the day.

Game Two

The Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.

Walsh bounced right back, tying the game in the second inning. The Cavs started with a runner on first after a single. Following a fielder's choice, Reed advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a single by Kennedy. Yaugher and Molette went back-to-back with two RBI singles to tie the game.

Southern Indiana ended the game with five runs in the final five innings for a 7-2 victory over the Cavaliers.

Bobey and Yaugher each had two of the nine hits for the Cavaliers in the nightcap.

The team will enjoy an off day on Wednesday (March 6) before resuming the Florida trip with games against Wheeling Jesuit (1:30 PM) and Concordia (3:45 PM) on Thursday (March 7).
