Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The 2020 season began on Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening at Vasco Field for the Walsh Cavaliers women's lacrosse team on a chilly night in North Canton. The Edinboro Fighting Scots spoiled the Cavaliers' season opener as Edinboro won the contest 10-7.
Emily Atwood opened the scoring less than one minute in with an unassisted goal for Walsh. The Fighting Scots scored two goals in the next nine minutes, taking a 2-1 advantage. Skylar Crandell tied the game at two on a free position shot with 17:57 left in the first half. Over the next ten minutes, Edinboro pushed the lead to 5-2 with three straight goals. Kendra Cowen-Tripp cut the lead to one with back-to-back goals for the Cavaliers, including an assist from Grace Andreski. The first half was closed by a 3-0 Edinboro run in the final minute as they led 8-4 at halftime.
The run continued into the second half as Edinboro tallied two straight goals in an eight minute span, opening a 10-4 lead with 22:20 left in the game. Andreski converted a free position shot with 20:05 remaining, kickstarting a 3-0 Walsh run. Hannah McFeeters closed the game with two consecutive goals, with one assist from Cowen-Tripp as Walsh fell 10-7 in the opener.
Cowen-Tripp led the Cavaliers with three points on a pair of goals and one assist while adding one groundball and two caused turnovers. McFeeters was the other multi-goal scorer with two goals on the evening with two groundballs, four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Crandell added four draw controls to her one goal in the opener. Atwood scored one goal, and led the team with three groundballs.
Rebecca Tomaszewski faced 24 shots in goal, making nine saves in the game.
The Cavaliers will welcome the #19 Mercyhurst Lakers to Vasco Field on Saturday (Feb. 22) for a 3:00 PM first draw.
